Neuro-Linguistic Programming, NLP Explained

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an engaging system of communication techniques and mind-body principles which enable a person to powerfully manage his or her thoughts, feelings, behavior and communicate in a way that is optimal for them. For example, NLP has tools which help people learn conversational flexibility – the critical awareness used to get into and maintain rapport easily and to understand others at a deep level in order to strengthen relationships. NLP also provides advanced strategies for persuasive communication, personal productivity and health and wellness.

Neuro-Linguistic refers to the direct relationship between our emotions and language. Programming is a means of using the awareness of that relationship to influence one’s own behavior and achieve specific desired changes; and to use it to help others to do the same.

NLP also incorporates on the study of high achievement. It empowers people to create excellence through a variety of modeling processes. By studying the methods and mindsets of the top performers in any arena, we can deduce and emulate their methods and thus attain similar results.

NLP was developed in California the early 1970s.  Colleagues Richard Bandler (then a mathematics student) and professor of linguistics John Grinder, decided to explore the full potential of language to help human beings create meaningful change and achieve high-level success. They did this by studying the three top therapists in the world at time, who were each known for their masterful use of language and ability to consistently achieve life-changing results for their clients. They were – Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson.

Through rigorous study of the methods used by these three top therapists, Bandler and Grinder were able to precisely extract the most powerful ways in which each therapist used language patterns. Bandler and Grinder then essentially compiled all the language techniques they learned, made modifications for wider use, and added their own methods and principles. They then synthesized all these ideas, principles, methods and techniques into a complete system that became known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Initially Bandler and Grinder mainly worked with and trained therapists, but later offered their trainings with educators and the general public.

In the four plus decades since its inception, NLP has continuously grown and evolved far past its roots in the world of therapy. Its principles and techniques have become used throughout the world and adopted in education, business, politics, entertainment and even many forms of spirituality. Now, with all the new advances in neuroscience and biology such as the wide-spread use of brain-scans that monitor changes in brain activity during specific types of activity (writing, meditation, decision making, other creative activities) and taking detailed measurements of body chemistry that accompany those activities, the principles of NLP can be further refined and developed like never before.

Learning some NLP concepts and techniques and working with an NLP based coach makes it possible to get rapid breakthroughs (“leaps forward”) in progress rather than in the linear progression that typically results from other coaching methods, traditional therapy or counseling. It’s also way more fun!
